Well, it’s a sad week for fans of post-hardcore punk.
On Monday, Thrice announced via its website the band will take a “break from being a full-time band.” After 13 years together, the band, which just released its most recent album Major/Minor, will tour in the spring and then break for the foreseeable future, though singer Dustin Kensrue said in the statement the band will not be breaking up.
Yesterday, Thursday also announced a hiatus. The band wanted to take a break, saying they achieved acclaim they never could have and all they wanted was to “play basement shows in New Brunswick (NJ).” The band released No Devolucion earlier this year.
Both bands were leaders in 2000s alt rock, changing the genre and spawning legions of followers. Thrice is one of my favorite bands, and Thursday is great too (and I hold a special place for the New Jersey natives). We wish both bands the best in their breaks.
