Lots of 7″ records come through our door, many of which have pretty interesting song titles or funny names. However, something about the new Rayon Beach 7″ called me to it — specifically, the ridiculousness of the opening track title.
(At this point, turn your little eyes away if your a child!)
“Airplanes with Tits,” opens the record, but something other than the title surprised me — it wasn’t too bad. The song starts with a gnarly synth that makes you think you might have your turntable on the wrong speed, but soon kicks off with an off-kilter guitar riff and that great HoZac garage sound.
“The Libertine And the Happy Slave” follows, and doesn’t let down. It has a heavier rhythm that calls for immediate foot-stopping. I can’t comment much on the lyrics because they’re largely lost in the purposely muddled sound mix, but I can say that the vibe is there.
What makes Rayon Beach notable is that there is a depth behind their novelty. There are hundreds of bands out there that release music under funny names with strange and/or possibly offensive sound but few can hold their own musically. Yes, Rayon Beach has a song called “Airplanes with Tits,” — but it’s actually pretty good. And that means something.
