Get your black lights and felt posters out along with the materials of your choice.  Press play, and off you go.  Elephants at the Door is a freaky out of body experience that anybody who has traveled to other dimensions can enjoy.

You wouldn’t know it from the English vocals, but Dumbo Gets Mad is from Italy (yea, Italy).  After the first track pulls us through what sounds like a time warp, the real journey begins.  The bass in “Plumy Tale” floats in behind an array of layered keyboards reminiscent of Smash Mouth’s Astro Lounge (awesome album, haters gon’ hate) and guitars that tweak like Sgt. Pepper’s.

One would think this is an MGMT rip-off at first listen, but you would be so very wrong.  Sure the music is kinda spacey and dancey at the same time, however, Dumbo Gets Mad has done a great job at making this album a very delicate and original sound.  The vocals are placed tenderly in the background of the mix, which creates that aesthetic of a transmission signal from Mars.

The album’s single “Eclectic Prawn” is a laid-back reggae influenced jam.  Again, the vocals are barely discernable as they glide above the backbeat carefully hanging, yet forcefully inserting the melody into your head.  The chorus has no words, but the catchy keyboard riffs are not easily forgettable.

If you are hanging in a basement or attic wasting the day away, try this album out for a nice switch from your Pink Floyd records. The trebly static drones on and the songs switch up never leaving the listener content with one feeling.  The tone will be changing as much as your cravings for various munchies.
