Many bands have been trying to recreate the post hardcore sound that broke through in the early 2000s.

Channeling the bombast of Story of the Year, Senses Fail and early Thrice, Currents plow through their new self-titled four-song EP. It certainly helps that production and mixing were done by Justin Powell and Kyle Black, who has worked with Set Your Goals and All Time Low.

The EP starts off with standard affair on “Cause I’m a G,” with pummeling drums and guitars supplementing the dual vocals of Joe Sherman and John Alaimo. “Chase the Sun” is a nice little switch, as it starts with some atmospheric strumming and riffing and is more textured than the other songs here.

“L for Lush” is an angry, hard-hitting rocker slightly reminiscent of A Day to Remember, and “What Big Teeth You Have” closes things out with some Taking Back Sunday dynamics.

Currents certainly bring some energy and passion here. This is a relentless collection of songs, which has some nice production that keeps things slick.

The big problem, though, is that there really isn’t much here that separates Currents from the rest of the pack. There are a lot of bands playing the same types of songs. There’s some talent here, but Currents should find its niche and work with its sound, and maybe the band will be able to break the mold a little. As it stands, this is a decent EP, nothing more, nothing less.
