The much anticipated opening night of Union Transfer has arrived and past. This brand new venue is located off Spring Garden Street in Philadelphia. A joint venture between the Bowery and R5 productions, Union Transfer opened it’s doors on Thursday with a highly appropriate first show.
Opening for the new music establishment was an equally new band, Polica. Channy Casselle, vocalist from the recently split folk band, Roma di Luna, had an excellent performance to start the night. Accompanied by two drummers, an electronic drum machine, and an enthusiastic bassist, Channy took her voice from Roma, added an electronic twist and raised her vocals to a whole new level. Where the percussion and rhythm provided the kinetic energy, Channy’s soulful voice gave Polica its reach.
Headliner, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah followed and put on one hell of a show. Lead singer and Philadelphia’s own, Alec Ounsworth took the energy brought by Polica and raised it up. Playing favorites such as ‘The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth’, CYHSY got the crowd moving. But it wasn’t until their final set of the night that the band showcased the ability of this new venue. Playing ‘Heavy Metal’, their sound pushed to the walls of the place, and the lighting changed to match the grande finale.
Where Polica hinted at the capability Union Transfer has at putting on an excellent intimate show, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah showed the crowd what Union Transfer can do when the band truly rocks the place.
And what a place it is. Housing three bars, numerous rooms, and multiple levels, there is a spot here for any kind of experience. Whether you want to be up front in the fray, overlooking from a balcony, sitting at a table, or even tucked away from the crowd, Union Transfer has what you’re looking for.
The look and feel is also something worth mentioning. With it’s intricate chandeliers, wooden furniture and slab serif typography, you get a feeling you’ve walked onto a set for some alternative history blockbuster. It is an incredibly exciting place to watch live music.
All in all the night did not disappoint. The bands put on a great show, and the energy in the place was cheerful and friendly. I’m looking forward to seeing many more shows at what is most definitely a great addition to the city of Philadelphia.
