It’s pretty surprising when you get a 7″ that isn’t filled to the brim with crazy energy. For some reason (What is, I’m putting my educated guess on the available length, Alex) most bands opt to put high-paced, catchy songs on both sides of their release.

But Le Sang Song seems to have headed down the opposite bath. Both songs on their new 7″ carry a slow and seeming leisurely pace while exploring some pretty strange sonic territory.

The first song, “Art vs. Life” rocks a steady beat with minimalistic guitar, with the bass almost take the lead throughout the song. The song is pretty entrancing, and only gets weirder as it eventually melts into some strange chanting thing that automatically calls into my head Rosemary’s Baby.

On the flip side, “Paper Rose” takes an even slower pace, but this time in more of a ballad format. The song has got the emotion, but the vocals fall pretty much flat, resulting in something that sounds more akin to a bad Thom Yorke impression. The song ends with another ominous chanting, this time sounds more like a dark Christmas caroling troupe.

Even with the negatives, I’d say overall I enjoyed the release. It takes a certain amount of gusto to release a slow 7″, especially when the B-side is an emotional ballad. ‘Art vs. Life’ far outshines ‘Paper Rose,’ but it’s a pretty good glimpse into a band that’s obviously not interested in taking the path most traveled.
