REVIEW: ‘A Short Collection of Short Songs’ by Mixtapes

Lately, it seems like there’s been somewhat of a resurgent quasi-pulse in the pop-punk world that so many (myself included) have pretty much left behind, with one of those up-and-coming acts being Cincinnati, Ohio’s Mixtapes.  The old-school pop-punk rockers sound straight out of the 90′s indie/emo rock rolodex, but in a rather welcoming way.  Think of it along the lines of a rather abridged cut of The Benjamin’s The Art of Disappointment.

A Short Collection of Short Songs packs six incredibly catchy tracks into 12 incredibly short minutes.  From the pop-punk rock honesty of “The Real Hotel California” and “I’m Like” to instantly-addicting acoustic sing-alongs “Soups Whatever” and “Whit’s End,” Mixtapes manages to embrace brevity in great way.  Not to mention it’s a safe bet that every one of these songs will end up stuck in your head at some point.

There’s something to be said about honest, to-the-point songs, and Mixtapes seems to have it down to a science.  If you have the slightest interest in renewing your closeted love for some good, short pop/punk and acoustic songs sure to be stuck in your head, A Short Collection of Short Songs should be right up your alley.
