The list of nominees for the 54th Grammy Awards was released last night, and as usual there was praise and confusion.
Kanye West leads the field with seven nominations, though neither of his albums in the last year garnered a nod for Album of the Year, to the dismay of many of his fans.
Adele comes in second with six nominations, and early buzz is she could clean up. Her smash hit “Rolling in the Deep,” was a huge hit on the radio and her album 21 sold well. You can see the full list of nominees here.
Foo Fghters are also up for Album of the Year for Wasting Light and Bon Iver is up for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist. Mumford and Sons’ song “The Cave” was a favorite of the committee this year, as it took in four nominations.
There were a few surprises. Radiohead grabbed just three nominations after releasing their highly anticipated album King of Limbs earlier this year. I also found it quite amusing that a Sum 41 song grabbed a nod for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.
Also, the nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance are exactly the same, and the nominees for Record of the Year and Song of the Year are almost exactly the same as well. The committee made it a point to reduce the list of awards this year. One would think if they were just gonna pick the same songs for every award they’d do away with a few more.
The Grammys are Feb. 12 on CBS. Let’s hope last year’s pleasantly surprising results carry over.
