I’m a huge fan of Sean Penn’s directing. In fact, when Into the Wild came out in 2007, I thought it should have not only been nominated for an Oscar, but a heavy contender.
Since then, he hasn’t directed anything, but that’s about to change. Penn is now set to direct Robert De Niro and Kristen Wiig in the drama The Comedian, which seems pretty cool (and heavy).
The film is summarized by the press release as such:
Jackie Burke (De Niro) is a raging comic who is past his prime. A once loved TV character in his hey day, he clings to any recognition of his former fame in the hope of reviving his now stagnant career. After being sentenced to community service for hitting an audience member in the head with his microphone, Jackie meets Harmony (Wiig), a dazzling and defiant redhead who turns his life sideways.
Collider also points out the film is slated to start production in the spring.
Once again, I can’t wait to see Penn in the director’s chair. The guy is a great artist and deserves some more projects like this.
