Golden Globes Nominations Announced

The Golden Globe noms were announced today. A good indication of what we’ll see for the Academy Awards.  There are a few surprises among the predictables.

First of all, why is My Week With Marilyn under the comedy/musical category? It wasn’t a musical and it wasn’t that comedic. Maybe it was marketed to the Globes that way so it could get nominations. I mean, I thought it was good, but not necessarily earth-shattering.  I’m glad though that 50/50 made it on the list for best Comedy or Musical  (probably the most random and arbitrary way to group a category together…ugh it makes me so mad) and I hope it beats Marilyn though it will probably go to Midnight in Paris.

The actor and actress nominees in the drama category aren’t surprising, as Streep always gets a nomination regardless of what she plays. However, the fact that Tilda Swinton was nominated makes me want to see We Need to Talk About Kevin even more. The actress nominations in the comedy or musical section are quite intriguing. Both Jodi Foster and Kate Winslet were nominated as leads for their roles in Carnage.  It will be interesting to see if that ends up hurting or helping either of them win. Also, again, I don’t think Michelle Williams’ role as Marilyn Monroe was comedic, but whatever. My vote will probably go for Charlize Theron for Young Adult anyway (oh how I love Diablo Cody).

As for best animated film, this is the first year in a while that a Pixar film has NOT been in the running. WHAT?! Well, they only came out with a subpar Cars 2 this year. I guess everyone has there flubs.  However, Winnie the Pooh was nominated, providing Disney a spot at least. Rango is probably the coolest on this list.

In the Land of Blood and Honey and The Skin I Live In received nominations for Foreign-Language film. It will be interesting to see if Jolie’s freshman effort or Almodovar’s signature bizarre piece win the category.

Another surprise, well kinda, is in the Director’s category. Scorsese was nominated for Hugo, which just proves his awesomeness, as children movies don’t usually get best director nominations. Also, George Clooney for Ides of March is a little bit of a surprise because I don’t think there was much added with the directing in the film. Woody Allen isn’t surprising, because, well, he’s Woody Allen.

Considering a silent film was nominated for best screenplay, this category is also an oddity. Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist was nominated along with Allen’s Midnight In Paris and Ides of March. I am slightly disappointed that 50/50 didn’t get a nomination. Their screenplay was great in a funny but heartfelt way.

As for the Television nominations, they’re not surprising. I’m glad Zooey Deschanel and The New Girl got nominated because I love that show. Check out the entire list of nominees below:
